अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः

The Commencement of the Great Departure

शिष्यं परिक्षितं तस्मै ददौ भरतसत्तम: । तत्पश्चात्‌ गुरुवर कृपाचार्यकी पूजा करके पुरवासियों-सहित परीक्षितको शिष्यभावसे उनकी सेवामें सौंप दिया ।। ततस्तु प्रकृती: सर्वा: समानाय्य युधिष्ठिर:

śiṣyaṃ parīkṣitaṃ tasmai dadau bharatasattamaḥ | tatpaścāt guruvare kṛpācāryakī pūjā kṛtvā puravāsibhiḥ saha parīkṣitaṃ śiṣyabhāvena tasya sevāyāṃ samarpya dadau || tatastu prakṛtīḥ sarvāḥ samānāyya yudhiṣṭhiraḥ |

വൈശമ്പായനൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ഭാരതശ്രേഷ്ഠനായ യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ പരീക്ശിതിനെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോട് ശിഷ്യനായി ഏല്പിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ഗുരുവരനായ കൃപാചാര്യനെ വിധിപൂർവ്വം പൂജിച്ച്, പൗരന്മാരോടുകൂടി പരീക്ശിതിനെ ശിഷ്യഭാവത്തോടെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സേവയിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുത്തി. പിന്നെ യുധിഷ്ഠിരൻ രാജ്യത്തിലെ സമസ്ത പ്രകൃതികളെ (പ്രജ, മന്ത്രിമാർ മുതലായവർ) ഒരുമിച്ചു വിളിച്ചു കൂട്ടാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
