प्रतापी सूतपुत्र कर्णने उस आग्नेयास्त्रको उद्दीप्त हुआ देखकर रणक्षेत्रमें उसकी शान्तिके लिये वारुणास्त्रका प्रयोग किया और उसके द्वारा उस आगको बुझा दिया ।।
sañjaya uvāca | pratāpī sūtaputraḥ karṇaḥ tam āgneyāstram uddīptaṁ dṛṣṭvā raṇakṣetre tasya śāntyai vāruṇāstram prayujya tenaiva tam agniṁ śamayāmāsa || balāhakaughaś ca diśas tarasvī cakāra sarvāḥ timireṇa saṁvṛtāḥ | tato dharitṛdharatulya-rodhasaḥ samantato vai parivārya vāriṇā ||
സഞ്ജയൻ പറഞ്ഞു—പിന്നീട് മഹാവേഗത്തോടെ മേഘസമൂഹങ്ങൾ കവിഞ്ഞുവന്ന് എല്ലാ ദിക്കുകളെയും ഇരുട്ടാൽ മൂടി. ദിഗന്തങ്ങൾ കറുത്ത പർവ്വതങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ തോന്നി; ചുറ്റുമുള്ള പ്രദേശം മുഴുവൻ കനത്ത മഴവെള്ളപ്പാച്ചിലിൽ മുങ്ങിപ്പോയി.
