Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how fear can dissolve even a large force when its champions fall; martial strength without steadiness and resolve collapses. Ethically, it underscores the kṣatriya ideal of firmness in crisis and the consequences when morale breaks.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, as Karna watched, the Kaurava host became terrified—especially of Bhīma—after key warriors were slain, and the army fled in disorder.
