गौरुडव्यूह-रचना तथा अर्धचन्द्र-प्रत्यव्यूह

कालदण्डोपमां घोरां मृत्योर्जिद्वामिव श्वसन्‌ । अब्रवीच्च तदा श्वेतो भीष्मं शान्तनवं रणे,अत्यन्त उग्र, महाभयंकर, कालदण्डके समान घोर और मृत्युकी जिह्वा-सी प्रतीत होनेवाली उस शक्तिको श्वेतने हाथमें उठाया और लंबी साँस लेते हुए रणक्षेत्रमें शान्तनुपुत्र भीष्मसे इस प्रकार कहा--

kāladaṇḍopamāṃ ghorāṃ mṛtyor jidvām iva śvasan | abravīc ca tadā śveto bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ raṇe ||

സഞ്ജയൻ പറഞ്ഞു—അപ്പോൾ ശ്വേതൻ ദീർഘശ്വാസം വിട്ടുകൊണ്ട്, കാലദണ്ഡംപോലെ ഘോരവും മരണത്തിന്റെ നാവുപോലെ തോന്നുന്നതുമായ ആ ഭയങ്കര ശക്തി ആയുധം ഉയർത്തി, യുദ്ധഭൂമിയിൽ ശാന്തനുപുത്രൻ ഭീഷ്മനോട് ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞു।
