The verse underscores how warfare, even when undertaken under claims of duty, can create an atmosphere of darkness—symbolically suggesting that violence obscures light, clarity, and auspiciousness. It invites reflection on the ethical cost of conflict and the need for discernment (viveka) amid dharma-based justifications.
Sañjaya describes the intensity of the battle: both armies hurl spears, javelins, lances, and volleys of arrows so densely that the sky appears dark, as if deprived of light.
