एतत् पदमनुद्धिग्नं वरिष्ठ धर्मलक्षणम् । उस विषयको यहाँ पूर्णतया सुनकर अच्छी प्रकार धारण करो। सब प्राणियोंकी अहिंसा ही सर्वोत्तम कर्तव्य है--ऐसा माना गया है। यह साधन उद्देगरहित
etad padam anuddhignaṁ variṣṭha-dharma-lakṣaṇam | yathārṇavaṁ mahāghoram aplavaḥ sampragāhate | bāhubhyām eva sammohād vardha vāñchaty asaṁśayam ||
വായു പറഞ്ഞു—ഇത് ഉദ്വേഗരഹിതമായ പഥം, ധർമ്മത്തിന്റെ ശ്രേഷ്ഠ ലക്ഷണം. ഈ വിഷയത്തെ പൂർണ്ണമായി കേട്ട് ഹൃദയത്തിൽ ധരിക്കുവിൻ. സർവ്വപ്രാണികളോടും അഹിംസയേ പരമധർമ്മമെന്ന് അംഗീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മോഹവശനായി ഒരാൾ വള്ളമില്ലാതെ അതിഭയങ്കരമായ മഹാസമുദ്രത്തിൽ ഇറങ്ങി, തന്റെ കൈകളാൽ മാത്രം നീന്തി കടക്കും എന്നു പ്രത്യാശിച്ചാൽ—നിസ്സംശയം അവൻ നാശത്തെയേ ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു; അതുപോലെ സത്യജ്ഞാനമെന്ന നൗകയുടെ ആശ്രയമില്ലാതെ ആരും ഭവസാഗരം കടക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല.
