Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
तुष्टोडभिचारसंयुक्तमाचचक्षे यथाविधि । उवाच चैनां भगवान् प्रीतो5स्मि सुभगे तव
tuṣṭo 'bhicārasaṃyuktam ācacakṣe yathāvidhi | uvāca caināṃ bhagavān prīto 'smi subhage tava ||
വൈശംപായനൻ പറഞ്ഞു— സന്തുഷ്ടനായ ആ മുനി വിധിപൂർവ്വം പ്രയോഗസഹിതമായ ഒരു മന്ത്രം അവൾക്ക് ഉപദേശിച്ചു; പിന്നെ പ്രീതിയോടെ പറഞ്ഞു— “സുഭഗേ! ഞാൻ നിന്നിൽ അത്യന്തം പ്രസന്നനാണ്.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights that spiritual power and ritual efficacy are transmitted only when approached with proper conduct: sincere service and hospitality lead to a sage’s favor, and a mantra must be taught and used strictly “yathāvidhi” (according to prescribed procedure), underscoring discipline, responsibility, and ethical restraint in handling potent knowledge.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that Durvāsā, satisfied with Pṛthā (Kuntī), grants her a boon in the form of a mantra, instructing her in its correct method of application. He explicitly expresses his pleasure with her, marking the moment when she receives the means that will later shape key events in the lineage.
