Vaitaraṇī: Torments of the Sinful, Sins Enumerated, and the Vaitaraṇī Go-dāna Rite
अवश्यमेव यास्यन्ति प्राणाः प्राघुणि (घूर्णि) का इव
avaśyameva yāsyanti prāṇāḥ prāghuṇi (ghūrṇi) kā iva
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda)

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: repeated reminders of prana’s departure and the urgency of dharma (general); Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: death as the trigger for the soul’s onward journey (general thematic link)
This verse stresses that prāṇa inevitably departs, encouraging timely dharma, detachment, and proper preparation for the post-death journey described in the Preta Kanda.
By highlighting the unavoidable exit of prāṇa, it sets the premise for the Garuda Purana’s after-death sequence—transition to the preta state and the onward journey governed by karma and rites.
Live with urgency in righteousness: reduce harmful actions, increase charity and devotion, and ensure family awareness of appropriate death rites (antyeṣṭi, śrāddha, piṇḍa-dāna) as taught in the Garuda Purana.
