Kali-yuga’s Degradation, the Advent of Kalki, and the Reset of the Yuga Cycle
ity eṣa mānavo vaṁśo yathā saṅkhyāyate bhuvi tathā viṭ-śūdra-viprāṇāṁ tās tā jñeyā yuge yuge
Just as the dynasty of kings includes exalted and insignificant, virtuous and wicked monarchs, varieties of human character are found in the intellectual, commercial and laboring orders of society.
This verse states that, just as dynasties are enumerated, the respective conditions and classifications of vaiśyas, śūdras, and brāhmaṇas are to be understood according to each age (yuga yuge), implying yuga-specific social characteristics.
Śukadeva concludes an enumeration of the Mānavā lineage and then extends the same method of understanding—systematic, age-by-age recognition—to social orders, as part of describing the symptoms and conditions of the yugas, especially Kali-yuga.
Rather than judging by birth-labels alone, one can recognize that people’s qualities and social conditions vary with time; therefore, practice dharma by cultivating genuine brāhmaṇical virtues (truthfulness, self-control, compassion) and devotional service appropriate for Kali-yuga.
