FAQs

This verse conveys Purāṇic cosmography: the classification of the world’s surrounding seas as oceans of distinct substances (salt, milk, curd, ghee, sugarcane-juice, fermented drink, sweet water, and whey).

It exemplifies the Agni Purāṇa’s encyclopedic scope by cataloging cosmological geography (samudra-types) alongside its many other domains (ritual, polity, medicine, arts), preserving a systematic Purāṇic world-model.

Knowing and reciting cosmographic descriptions is traditionally treated as a form of Purāṇic śravaṇa/adhyayana (study and hearing), believed to cultivate dharma-oriented understanding and merit through contemplation of the ordered universe.
