Lord Shiva (teaching Uma/Parvati within the Umāsaṃhitā discourse)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Shakti Form: Umā
Role: teaching
Offering: naivedya
The verse lists sense-stimulating foods and intoxicants to be restrained in a Śaiva vrata, emphasizing niyama (discipline) so the mind becomes fit for devotion to Pati (Shiva) and for loosening pāśa (bondage) over the pashu (individual soul).
Linga-worship requires inner and outer purity; regulating diet supports steadiness in japa, dhyāna, and pūjā, making devotion to Saguna Shiva focused and sattvic rather than driven by rajas/tamas.
Adopt vrata-style restraint (especially avoiding intoxicants and heavy foods) alongside Shiva-pūjā with Panchākṣarī japa (Om Namaḥ Śivāya); this complements practices like Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa by stabilizing the mind.
