This hymn invokes the paired powers Indra and Agni as joint Vṛtra-slayers, asking them to accept a fresh, pure praise-song and to grant immediate strength, victory, and thriving “vāja” to the worshipper. It places their aid in the context of sacrifice and communal contest, urging them to strike down godless opposition and to protect the people with well-being, with a closing glance toward allied gods (Viṣṇu, the Maruts) so the sacrificer is not overlooked.
Mantra 1
शुचिं नु स्तोमं नवजातमद्येन्द्राग्नी वृत्रहणा जुषेथाम् । उभा हि वां सुहवा जोहवीमि ता वाजं सद्य उशते धेष्ठा ॥
This pure hymn, newborn today, may Indra and Agni, slayers of the obstructer, accept. For both of you are easy to call; I invoke you again and again—do you at once set the plenitude of force for the one who seeks.
Mantra 2
ता सानसी शवसाना हि भूतं साकंवृधा शवसा शूशुवांसा । क्षयन्तौ रायो यवसस्य भूरेः पृङ्क्तं वाजस्य स्थविरस्य घृष्वेः ॥
You two are indeed winners, growing together, increasing in force, ever strengthening by force. Dwelling in the wealth of abundant nourishment, you mingle and pour out the firm, impetuous plenitude of force.
Mantra 3
उपो ह यद्विदथं वाजिनो गुर्धीभिर्विप्राः प्रमतिमिच्छमानाः । अर्वन्तो न काष्ठां नक्षमाणा इन्द्राग्नी जोहुवतो नरस्ते ॥
When the inspired seers, seeking the right guidance, draw near to the assembly with their concentrated thoughts, they move like steeds reaching the goal. O Indra and Agni, your men invoke you—again and again.
Mantra 4
गीर्भिर्विप्रः प्रमतिमिच्छमान ईट्टे रयिं यशसं पूर्वभाजम् । इन्द्राग्नी वृत्रहणा सुवज्रा प्र नो नव्येभिस्तिरतं देष्णैः ॥
With uttered words of vision the seer, seeking the forward-moving intelligence, adores and calls for the radiant fullness (rayi) that carries glory and is the ancient share. O Indra-and-Agni, slayers of the Coverer, wielders of the good thunderbolt-force, carry us across by your ever-new gifts of guidance and giving.
Mantra 5
सं यन्मही मिथती स्पर्धमाने तनूरुचा शूरसाता यतैते । अदेवयुं विदथे देवयुभिः सत्रा हतं सोमसुता जनेन ॥
When the great opposing powers clash in rivalry, you two—shining in your own body of light, winners of the hero’s prize—advance. In the assembly of the sacrifice, with those who seek the gods, strike down utterly the ungod-seeking force, O you for whom the Soma is pressed by the people.
Mantra 6
इमामु षु सोमसुतिमुप न एन्द्राग्नी सौमनसाय यातम् । नू चिद्धि परिमम्नाथे अस्माना वां शश्वद्भिर्ववृतीय वाजैः ॥
Come now to this Soma-offering of ours, O Indra-and-Agni, for a glad and harmonious mind. For even now you encompass and protect us; may I ever turn toward you with enduring plenitudes of force (vāja) that renew the movement.
Mantra 7
सो अग्न एना नमसा समिद्धोऽच्छा मित्रं वरुणमिन्द्रं वोचेः । यत्सीमागश्चकृमा तत्सु मृळ तदर्यमादितिः शिश्रथन्तु ॥
O Agni, kindled by this reverence, speak forth to Mitra, Varuṇa, and Indra. Whatever fault we have made—do you soothe and set it right; may Aryaman and Aditi loosen and release that knot of error from us.
Mantra 8
एता अग्न आशुषाणास इष्टीर्युवोः सचाभ्यश्याम वाजान् । मेन्द्रो नो विष्णुर्मरुतः परि ख्यन्यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥
By these swift-aspiring offerings, O Agni, may we, in your companionship, attain the plenitudes of force. Let not Indra, nor Vishnu, nor the Maruts overlook us; do you protect us always with states of well-being and right-going.
Indrāgnī means Indra and Agni invoked as a pair. Indra represents conquering strength, while Agni is the sacrificial fire that carries offerings; together they unite ritual power with victory over obstacles.
It asks Indra–Agni to accept the fresh hymn and to grant vāja—strength, success, and winning power—quickly, while also destroying hostile or ‘godless’ opposition and protecting the worshippers.
The closing verse broadens the protection: the poet prays that Indra, Viṣṇu, and the Maruts do not overlook the sacrificer. It is a way of securing welfare (svasti) from the wider circle of allied divine powers.
