Sukta 59

Mantra 1

प्र वः स्पळक्रन्त्सुविताय दावनेऽर्चा दिवे प्र पृथिव्या ऋतं भरे । उक्षन्ते अश्वान्तरुषन्त आ रजोऽनु स्वं भानुं श्रथयन्ते अर्णवैः ॥

Forth have you leapt for the blissful going and the giving; I bring the chant to Heaven and to Earth, bearing the Right. Your steeds are made to swell with power; they rush through the luminous spaces, and along their own radiance they loosen the floods—releasing the streaming plenitudes that open the way.

Mantra 2

अमादेषां भियसा भूमिरेजति नौर्न पूर्णा क्षरति व्यथिर्यती । दूरेदृशो ये चितयन्त एमभिरन्तर्महे विदथे येतिरे नरः ॥

From their sheer presence and awe, the earth trembles; like a full ship the moving unrest pours and overflows. Far-seeing are these heroes who take notice by their onrushes; they enter within the great assembly of consciousness, arriving to the inner session where the Truth is to be established.

Mantra 3

गवामिव श्रियसे शृङ्गमुत्तमं सूर्यो न चक्षू रजसो विसर्जने । अत्या इव सुभ्वश्चारवः स्थन मर्या इव श्रियसे चेतथा नरः ॥

Like the supreme horn of the luminous herds, and like the Sun’s eye at the releasing of the worlds’ spaces, you take your station—bright, fair-moving, like swift steeds; like youthful warriors you awaken toward splendour, O men (Maruts).

Mantra 4

को वो महान्ति महतामुदश्नवत्कस्काव्या मरुतः को ह पौंस्या । यूयं ह भूमिं किरणं न रेजथ प्र यद्भरध्वे सुविताय दावने ॥

Who among you attains the great deeds of the Great, O Maruts—who the inspired wisdom, who the manly power? For you make the earth tremble like a scattering beam, when you bear yourselves forward for the good passage, for the giving.

Mantra 5

अश्वा इवेदरुषासः सबन्धवः शूरा इव प्रयुधः प्रोत युयुधुः । मर्या इव सुवृधो वावृधुर्नरः सूर्यस्य चक्षुः प्र मिनन्ति वृष्टिभिः ॥

Like ruddy horses indeed, bound together as kin, like heroes armed for onset they press forward and contend; like young warriors they grow in a good increase—these powers dim the Sun’s eye with their rains (so that the hidden light may be released anew).

Mantra 6

ते अज्येष्ठा अकनिष्ठास उद्भिदोऽमध्यमासो महसा वि वावृधुः । सुजातासो जनुषा पृश्निमातरो दिवो मर्या आ नो अच्छा जिगातन ॥

They are without eldest and without youngest, breakers-out, without a middle—by greatness they have spread in wideness; well-born by birth, sons of Prishni, youths of Heaven—come to us, hither, to our call.

Mantra 7

वयो न ये श्रेणीः पप्तुरोजसान्तान्दिवो बृहतः सानुनस्परि । अश्वास एषामुभये यथा विदुः प्र पर्वतस्य नभनूँरचुच्यवुः ॥

Like birds in ordered flight they have sped by their force around the ends of the vast Heaven’s ridge; their steeds know both ways as they know—forward they have shaken loose the cloud-masses from the mountain.

Mantra 8

मिमातु द्यौरदितिर्वीतये नः सं दानुचित्रा उषसो यतन्ताम् । आचुच्यवुर्दिव्यं कोशमेत ऋषे रुद्रस्य मरुतो गृणानाः ॥

May Heaven and Aditi measure out for our enjoying; may the many-gifted Dawns strive together. These Maruts of Rudra, sung by the seer, have dislodged and brought near the divine treasury.
