Ātman (Self)
Concept: The Self, as guide, reveals the nature of the ‘five’ and invites attentive hearing as the doorway to understanding.
Application: Cultivate śravaṇa: set aside time to listen—scripture, teacher, or inner conscience—before judging others or oneself; let insight be ‘shown’ rather than forced.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta

“Ātmovāca” literally means “the Self said,” marking Ātman as the speaking voice introducing an instruction or discourse.
They are presented as five noble, fortunate, and resolute persons, serving as the immediate audience for whom the forthcoming teaching (jñāna/upadeśa) will be delivered.
The verse frames knowledge as something to be formally conveyed and attentively heard, highlighting readiness, worthiness of recipients, and disciplined listening as prerequisites for instruction.
