मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse links identity and legitimacy to remembered ritual precedence: being defined by the ‘first offering’ (āgrayaṇa) made in proper association with the gods (Indra/Agni) and by acknowledged lineage (anvaya). It underscores the Mahābhārata theme that dharma is preserved through correct tradition and rightful descent.
Mārkaṇḍeya is describing a figure known as Agni-Āgrayaṇa, characterizing him through a traditional account of his sacrificial practice—his initial oblation is said to be offered together with Indra—and then stating his descent from Bhānu (the Sun), situating him within a recognized genealogical framework.
