Adhyāya 2: Nārada’s Disclosure—Karṇa’s Training and the Brahmin’s Curse (Śānti-parva)

नारद उवाच
The verse presents a severe dharmic idea: for kṣatriyas, death in battle can function as a kind of ‘purification’ leading to svarga. It also raises an ethical tension—violence is not celebrated for its own sake, but shown as a providential mechanism tied to duty, destiny, and the cosmic regulation of power.
Nārada explains a divine deliberation: seeking a way for the entire kṣatriya community to reach heaven through being ‘purified by weapons,’ a cause of great conflict is set in motion by creating a child from a maiden’s womb—an agent who will become the catalyst for widespread confrontation.
