The verse teaches acceptance of the inviolable order of destiny (diṣṭa/vidhi) associated with Kṛtānta: some outcomes in life—especially death and the ripening of past actions—cannot be prevented, so one should restrain grief and meet events with steadiness.
Sañjaya consoles the addressed Bharata elder (commonly Dhṛtarāṣṭra) amid the catastrophic events of the war, explaining that what has occurred is the unfolding of an ancient, preordained allotment and cannot be undone by lamentation.
