Educational Q&A

The verse underscores how large-scale conflict draws in many regions and peoples, reminding the reader that war is sustained not only by heroes but by extensive alliances and organized support—an implicit ethical reflection on the wide human cost and collective responsibility in warfare.

Sañjaya is reporting the disposition of troops within a battle formation, specifying that the Kaliṅgas, Sāmbaṣṭhas, Māgadhas, Pauṇḍras, and Madrakas were positioned at the rear as supporting contingents.
