Educational Q&A

The verse highlights atithi-dharma: when a worthy guest—especially a sage—arrives, one should recognize him, honor him respectfully, and provide proper sustenance. Reverence must be expressed through both ritual courtesy (arcana) and practical care (feeding).

Bhīṣma narrates that Maitreya recognizes the eminent sage Vyāsa who has come and taken a seat; Maitreya then performs respectful worship and serves him an excellent meal, setting a model of proper conduct toward venerable visitors.
