Varṇa-adhikāra, Karma, and the Protection of One’s Attained Spiritual Status (वर्णाधिकारः कर्म च स्वस्थानरक्षणम्)
युद्धं पुण्यतमं स्वर्ग्यं रूपज्ञं सर्वतोमुखम् । सर्वेषामेव वर्णानां क्षत्रियस्य विशेषतः
yuddhaṃ puṇyatamaṃ svargyaṃ rūpajñaṃ sarvatomukham | sarveṣāmeva varṇānāṃ kṣatriyasya viśeṣataḥ
ಯುದ್ಧವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪುಣ್ಯಕರವೂ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಪ್ರದವೂ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ; ಅದು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ನಿಜ ಸ್ವರೂಪವನ್ನು (ಶೌರ್ಯ-ಚರಿತ್ರ) ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಎಲ್ಲ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಎದುರಾಗುವ ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಎದುರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಎಲ್ಲ ವರ್ಣಗಳಿಗೂ ಉಪದೇಶ, ಆದರೆ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯನ ಧರ್ಮ.

It frames dharma-yuddha as a high form of karma performed in one’s ordained duty, where courage, sacrifice, and truthfulness are tested—actions that, when aligned with righteousness and offered to Pati (Lord Shiva), generate great puṇya.
In Shaiva understanding, even worldly duties become sanctified when done without ego and with remembrance of Saguna Shiva; the verse points to disciplined action as an offering, supporting inner purity that culminates in steadfast devotion to Shiva (often expressed through Linga worship).
The practical takeaway is to perform one’s duty with Shiva-smaraṇa (remembrance of Shiva) and japa of the Panchakshara—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—before and after action, dedicating the fruits to Shiva to reduce bondage (pāśa).
