śaṃkara uvāca | he hare he vidhe devāśśṛṇutādarato'khilāḥ | yathocitamahaṃ vacmi saviśeṣaṃ vivekataḥ
Lord Shiva (Shankara)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It establishes Shiva as the supreme teacher who speaks with viveka (discriminative wisdom), indicating that true understanding of dharma and liberation arises from attentive listening and discernment under divine guidance.
Though the verse is introductory, it frames Shiva’s forthcoming instruction as precise and practical—characteristic of Saguna Shiva’s grace, where the Lord communicates accessible teachings that later support right worship, including Linga-upasana and disciplined devotion.
The implied practice is śravaṇa (reverent listening) with viveka—approaching Shiva’s teachings with focused attention; this supports mantra-japa (such as the Panchakshara) and steady meditation by grounding the mind in right understanding.
