Sukta 7.36

Rishi

Vasiṣṭha (opening of RV 7.36, Vasiṣṭha cycle)

Devata

Agni (with Sūrya as supporting power of illumination)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (typical for Agni hymns; cadence suggests triṣṭubh)

Inside Sukta 36

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Inspired speech rises from ṛta’s seat; cosmic illumination breaks open as Sūrya releases the lights, and Agni is kindled in the altar’s middle.

  2. Development

Agni’s priestly role is praised as the force that spreads strength and right order; worshippers seek companionship with the divine and growth within ṛta’s dwelling.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s power concentrates in the effective praise that ‘spreads wide’ strength—devotion becomes potency, and the requested awakening/protection is secured through the invoked powers.

  4. Where it settles

The chant is directed to protective deities (Maruts and Viṣṇu) and ends with petitions for offspring, widening life-force, and continual safeguarding through svasti.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the kindled flame on the altar and the divine Hotṛ who carries offerings, awakens the gods, and makes the rite effective; he is praised as bright, central, and order-establishing. Sūrya’s rays “release the cows” of light, supplying the illumination in which Agni’s work becomes manifest and rightly oriented.
  • Cosmic functionMediator between heaven and earth: he conveys oblations to the devas, maintains the continuity of sacrifice, and upholds ṛta by transforming matter into luminous offering. In concert with Sūrya’s light, he restores visibility, direction, and the expansive ordering of the worlds.
  • Inner significanceAgni signifies the awakened will and discerning intelligence that ‘kindles’ aspiration, purifies impulses, and turns life into conscious offering; Sūrya signifies the clarifying insight that releases inner ‘lights’ (the cows) from obscurity. Together they represent the union of aspiration (fire) and illumination (sun) that stabilizes truth-speaking and right action.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Vasiṣṭhas; traditional seer-family of Maṇḍala 7) · Principal seer of Rig Veda Maṇḍala 7; renowned as a Brahmarṣi who articulates ṛta-centered kingship, ritual precision, and the theology of Agni as the household and royal priest.

Attributes of the deity

  • Hotṛ and messenger of the gods
  • Kindled in the midmost altar-space
  • Purifier and transformer
  • Upholder of ṛta through ritual order
  • Giver of vitality (vayaḥ) and increase
  • Linked with illumination through Sūrya’s rays

Also by this seer

  • Rig Veda Maṇḍala 7 (Vasiṣṭha hymns, including many Agni and Indra praises)

  • Later Vedic and Itihāsa-Purāṇa tradition remembers him as a paradigmatic priest-sage and lineage founder (Vasiṣṭha gotra)

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare and purify the altar-space; arrange kindling and sacred grass.
  • Begin with brahman (inspired utterance) aligned to ṛta—recitation that ‘goes forth from the seat of Truth.’
  • Kindle Agni at the center of the altar; establish the flame as the officiating presence.
  • Invoke illumination (Sūrya) as the revealer of the ‘cows’ of light—clarity for the rite and mind.
  • Offer oblations into Agni with praise; request vitality, increase, and right dwelling in ṛta.
  • Extend protective invocation to allied powers as the hymn does (Rudra/Maruts/Viṣṇu) for safeguarding and wellbeing.
  • Conclude with svasti (wellbeing) petitions for the singer and offspring; seal with final oblation.

Offerings

  • Ghṛta (clarified butter)
  • Samidhs (kindling sticks)
  • Milk/curds (as customary in domestic fire offerings)
  • Grain cakes or roasted grain (as applicable to the rite)

Frequently Asked Questions

It establishes the sacrifice in ṛta (cosmic truth-order): inspired speech begins the rite, Sūrya brings illumination, and Agni is kindled at the altar as the priestly mediator who grants vitality and wellbeing.

In Vedic symbolism, “cows” often mean rays or lights. The hymn says Sūrya releases these lights, suggesting clarity and revelation that support Agni’s ritual work and the mind’s awakening.

Agni is the main deity, but the hymn briefly widens the invocation to allied powers for protection and increase. Rudra represents intense awakening and safeguarding, while the Maruts and Viṣṇu are asked to guard the singer and grant wellbeing and offspring.
