Adhyaya 38 — Dattatreya on Non-Identification (Mamata) and the Path to Liberation
कं वा पश्यामि राजेन्द्र ! प्रधानमिदमावयोः ।
यतः परो हि क्षेत्रज्ञः सङ्घातो हि गुणात्मकः ॥
kaṃ vā paśyāmi rājendra ! pradhānamidamāvayoḥ |
yataḥ paro hi kṣetrajñaḥ saṅghāto hi guṇātmakaḥ ||
ಹಾಗಾದರೆ, ಓ ರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನೇ, ನಾನು ಯಾರನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ? ನಮ್ಮ ವಿಷಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಕೇವಲ ಪ್ರಧಾನ (ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ) ಮಾತ್ರ; ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಜ್ಞನು ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅತೀತನು, ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಘಾತ (ದೇಹ-ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಸಮೂಹ) ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾಗಿದೆ.

What we ordinarily ‘see’ as a person is a guṇa-made assemblage; the true knower is other than this and must be realized as distinct to end bondage.

The rhetorical ‘whom do I see?’ undermines reification of ego. Seeing only prakṛti’s display while abiding as kṣetrajña is the pivot from saṃsāra to mokṣa.
