Ajñātavāsa-saṅkalpaḥ — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Resolve and Dhaumya’s Exempla on Concealment
यम उवाच पतिव्रतासि सावित्रि तथैव च तपो<न्विता । अतस्त्वामभिभाषामि विद्धि मां त्वं शुभे यमम्,यमराज बोले--सावित्री! तू पतिव्रता और तपस्विनी है, इसलिये मैं तुझसे वार्तालाप कर सकता हूँ। शुभे! तू मुझे यमराज जान
yama uvāca: pativratāsi sāvitrī tathaiva ca tapo'nvitā | atas tvām abhibhāṣāmi viddhi māṁ tvaṁ śubhe yamam ||
ಯಮನು ಹೇಳಿದನು—ಸಾವಿತ್ರಿ! ನೀ ಪತಿವ್ರತೆ; ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ತಪೋಬಲದಿಂದ ಯುಕ್ತಳಾಗಿದ್ದೀ. ಆದಕಾರಣ ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನೊಡನೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಶುಭೇ! ನನನ್ನು ಯಮರಾಜನೆಂದು ತಿಳಿ.
यम उवाच
Moral and spiritual authority is recognized by Yama in Sāvitrī’s pativratā-dharma and tapas; virtue grants one the standing to engage even Death in meaningful dialogue.
Yama identifies himself to Sāvitrī and explains why he will converse with her: her unwavering devotion to her husband and her ascetic merit make her worthy of being addressed directly.
