Chapter 29

स चेन्ममार सूंजय चतुर्भद्रतरस्त्वया । पुत्रात्‌ पुण्यतरश्वैव मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथा:

sa cen mamāra suñjaya caturbhadrataras tvayā | putrāt puṇyataras caiva mā putram anutapyathāḥ ||

ವಾಯು ಹೇಳಿದರು—“ಓ ಸುಂಜಯ! ನಿನ್ನಿಗಿಂತ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂಗಳಗುಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರಾಗಿದ್ದವರೂ, ನಿನ್ನ ಪುತ್ರನಿಗಿಂತಲೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪುಣ್ಯವಂತರಾಗಿದ್ದವರೂ ಮರಣ ಹೊಂದಿದರು. ಹಾಗಿರಲು ನಿನ್ನ ಪುತ್ರನಿಗೆ ಮರಣದ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಯಾವ ವಿಶೇಷ ಹಕ್ಕು? ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪುತ್ರನಿಗಾಗಿ ಶೋಕಿಸಬೇಡ.”

Educational Q&A

Death is universal and does not spare even those who are more virtuous or more excellently endowed; therefore excessive grief is to be restrained, and one should cultivate steadiness and acceptance in accordance with dharma.

Vāyudeva addresses Suñjaya, reasoning with him to lessen his sorrow: if even superior and highly meritorious persons have died, Suñjaya should not be overwhelmed by grief for his own son.
