Gratitude, Discernment, and the Escalation of Power (Śvā–Dvipī–Vyāghra–Nāga–Siṃha–Śarabha Itihāsa)
तस्यर्षेरुपविष्टस्थ पादमूले महामते । मनुष्यवद्गतो भावो स्नेहबद्धों& भवद् भूशम्
tasyarṣer upaviṣṭastha-pādamūle mahāmate | manuṣyavad gato bhāvo sneha-baddho ’bhavad bhūśam ||
ಭೀಷ್ಮನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ಮಹಾಮತೇ! ಆ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಯ ಪಾದಮೂಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದ ಆ ನಾಯಿಯ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾನವನಂತೆಯೇ ಸ्नेಹಭಾವ ಉದಯವಾಯಿತು. ಅದು ಋಷಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಂಧಿತವಾಯಿತು.
भीष्म उवाच
Even an animal can develop refined, ‘human-like’ affection through proximity to a virtuous person; the verse highlights the moral power of saintly association and the binding force of sneha (attachment).
A dog sits near a great sage’s feet and, through that closeness, becomes intensely attached to him, experiencing a disposition comparable to human affection.
