न दिशो टद्यौर्न चोर्वी च न सम॑ विषमं तथा । उस अन्धकारमें न तो कौरव पहचाने जाते थे और न पांचाल तथा पाण्डव ही। दिशा, आकाश, भूमण्डल और सम-विषम स्थान आदिका भी पता नहीं चलता था
na diśo tad dyauḥ na ca urvī ca na samaṃ viṣamaṃ tathā |
ಸಂಜಯನು ಹೇಳಿದನು—ಆ ಘೋರ ಅಂಧಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳೂ ಕಾಣಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಆಕಾಶವೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ವಿಶಾಲ ಭೂಮಿಯೂ ತಿಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ; ಸಮ-ವಿಷಮದ ಭೇದವೂ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆ ಅಂಧ ರಣಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೌರವರನ್ನೂ ಗುರುತಿಸಲಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಪಾಂಚಾಲರನ್ನೂ ಪಾಂಡವರನ್ನೂ ಸಹ—ಯುದ್ಧದ ಗೊಂದಲವು ಗುರುತು ಮತ್ತು ದಿಕ್ಕಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ಚಿಹ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಅಳಿಸಿಹಾಕಿತ್ತು.
