Excessive, mentally clung-to grief is portrayed as ethically harmful: it does not merely affect the mourner but is said to distress the departed forefathers. The implied dharma is measured mourning and steadiness, supporting proper ancestral well-being and ritual order.
Vaiśampāyana addresses a king and explains a principle about mourning: when someone grieves too intensely for the dead, that grief is believed to cause suffering to the ancestors who have already passed away.
