Dāna-Śreṣṭhatā: On the Superiority of Giving
Maitreya–Vyāsa Exemplum
कीड़ेने कहा--महामते! यह जो बहुत बड़ी बैलगाड़ी आ रही है, इसीकी घर्घराहट सुनकर मुझे भय हो गया है; क्योंकि उसकी यह आवाज बड़ी भयंकर है ।।
kīṭa uvāca—mahāmate! iyaṃ yā mahāśakaṭī samāyāti, tasyā ghoṣaṃ śrutvā me bhayaṃ jātaṃ; bhīṣaṇo hy eṣā ninādaḥ. śrūyate na ca māṃ hanyād iti hāsmād apakrame. śvasatāṃ ca śṛṇomy enaṃ goputrāṇāṃ pratodyatām.
ಕೀಟನು ಹೇಳಿದರು—ಓ ಮಹಾಮತೇ! ಈ ಮಹಾ ಎತ್ತಿನ ಗಾಡಿ ಇತ್ತ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಅದರ ಘರ್ಘರ ಧ್ವನಿಯನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ನನಗೆ ಭಯ ಉಂಟಾಗಿದೆ; ಆ ಶಬ್ದವೇ ಭಯಾನಕ. ಅದು ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದೊಡನೆ ‘ಇದು ಬಂದು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ತುಳಿದು ಕೊಲ್ಲಬಾರದೆ?’ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಶಯ ಎದ್ದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ; ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ತ್ವರಿತವಾಗಿ ದಾರಿಯಿಂದ ಸರಿದು ಓಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನೋಡಿ, ಎತ್ತುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಚಾಟಿಯ ಹೊಡೆತ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದೆ; ಅವು ಭಾರವಾದ ಹೊರೆ ಎಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹಾಂಫುತ್ತಾ ಇತ್ತ ಬರುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಅವುಗಳ ಶಬ್ದ ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬ ಸಮೀಪವಾಗಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ; ಗಾಡಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕೂತಿರುವ ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ನಾನಾವಿಧ ಮಾತುಗಳೂ ನನ್ನ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿವೆ.
