यः शब्दबोधजननः परेषां शृण्वतां स्फुटम् / स्वाध्यायो वाचिकः प्रोक्त उपांशोरथ लक्षणम्

ಇತರರು ಕೇಳುವಂತೆ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ ಶಬ್ದದಿಂದ ಬೋಧವನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುವ ಸ್ವಾಧ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ‘ವಾಚಿಕ’ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗಿದೆ; ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಾದ ‘ಉಪಾಂಶು’ಯ ಲಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟಪಡಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ।
