Humility, Surrender, and the Power of the Name
vāruṇyuvāca / lakṣmīpate brahmapate manoḥ pategiraḥ pate rudrapate nṛṇāṃ pate / guṇāṃstava stotumahaṃ samarthā na pārvatī nāpi suparṇapatnī
Vāruṇī
Concept: Stuti culminates in recognizing the Lord’s guṇas as ultimately inexhaustible and beyond complete articulation.
Vedantic Theme: Anirvacanīyatā (inexpressibility) of the Supreme; īśvaratva as the ground of all deities and cosmic functions.
Application: Cultivate humility in devotion: praise sincerely while remembering that language cannot exhaust the Divine; let this deepen surrender rather than discourage worship.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana (general): recurring motif of Vishnu-stuti as superior to all other supports; Garuda Purana: praise sections where speakers admit incapacity to describe Hari’s guṇas
This verse frames Viṣṇu’s qualities as immeasurable, teaching humility in devotion and emphasizing His supremacy over all cosmic functions (wealth, creation, law, speech, and dissolution).
Although the Garuḍa Purāṇa is famous for afterlife and ritual teachings, it repeatedly anchors them in bhakti: ultimate refuge and authority belong to Viṣṇu, beyond the capacities of even exalted beings to fully describe.
Use the verse as a brief daily stuti: approach learning, ritual, and ethics with humility, remembering that spiritual progress is supported by devotion and reverence for the divine source of dharma and right speech.
