Śivarātri-vrata (The Observance of Śivarātri)
ಈ ಅಧ್ಯಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಗ್ನಿ ವಸಿಷ್ಠರಿಗೆ ಶಿವರಾತ್ರಿ ವ್ರತದ ವಿಧಿಯನ್ನು ಉಪದೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ; ಇದು ಭುಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ನೀಡುವ ವ್ರತ. ಮಾಘ–ಫಾಲ್ಗುಣ ಮಧ್ಯೆ ಬರುವ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು ಇದರ ಆಚರಣೆ ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ. ಸಾಧಕನು ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು ಉಪವಾಸ ಮಾಡಿ, ರಾತ್ರಿಯೆಲ್ಲ ಜಾಗರಣವೇ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಉಪಾಸನೆ. ಭಕ್ತನು ಶಂಭುವನ್ನು ಭೋಗ-ಮೋಕ್ಷದಾತನಾಗಿ ಆವಾಹಿಸಿ, ‘ನರಕ-ಸಾಗರ’ ದಾಟಿಸುವ ನೌಕೆಯೆಂದು ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಿ; ಸಂತಾನ, ರಾಜ್ಯ, ಸೌಭಾಗ್ಯ, ಆರೋಗ್ಯ, ವಿದ್ಯೆ, ಧರ್ಮ, ಧನ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಮೋಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಬೇಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಟೆಗಾರನಾಗಲಿ ಪಾಪಿ ಸುಂದರಸೇನನಾಗಲಿ ಈ ವ್ರತದಿಂದ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಪಡೆದು ಉನ್ನತಿಗೇರಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಅದರ ಸುಲಭತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿವರ್ತನಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.
