Mantra 1
दे॒वस्य॑ त्वा सवि॒तुः प्र॑स॒वेऽश्विनो॑र्बा॒हुभ्यां॑ पू॒ष्णो हस्ता॑भ्याम् । आ द॑दे॒ नारि॑रसि
At the impulsion of the god Savitṛ I take thee, with the arms of the Aśvins, with the hands of Pūṣan. Thou art no foe.
Mantra 2
यु॒ञ्जते॒ मन॑ उ॒त यु॑ञ्जते॒ धियो॒ विप्रा॒ विप्र॑स्य बृह॒तो वि॑प॒श्चित॑ः । वि होत्रा॑ दधे वयुना॒विदेक॒ इन्म॒ही दे॒वस्य॑ सवि॒तुः परि॑ष्टुति॒ः स्वाहा॑
They yoke the mind, and they yoke the thoughts—the inspired ones—of the inspired, the great, the all-discerning. He, the one, the knower of ordinances, hath set in order the priestly offices: mighty is the encompassing praise of the god Savitṛ. Svāhā!
Mantra 3
देवी॑ द्यावापृथिवी म॒खस्य॑ वाम॒द्य शिरो॑ राध्यासं देव॒यज॑ने पृथि॒व्याः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
O goddesses Heaven and Earth, may I this day successfully accomplish for you the head of Makha, in the gods’ place of worship upon the earth. For Makha I take thee; for Makha’s head I take thee.
Mantra 4
देव्यो॑ वम्र्यो भू॒तस्य॑ प्रथम॒जा म॒खस्य॑ वो॒ऽद्य शिरो॑ राध्यासं देव॒यज॑ने पृथि॒व्याः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
Ye divine (clods) from the ant-hill, first-born of Being, I would this day successfully set you as the head of Makha, on the Earth, in the place of sacrifice for the Gods. For Makha thee; for Makha’s head thee!
Mantra 5
इय॒त्यग्र॑ आसीन्म॒खस्य॑ ते॒ऽद्य शिरो॑ राध्यासं देव॒यज॑ने पृथि॒व्याः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
Of such a measure, in the beginning, was Makha: this day would I successfully set for thee his head, on the Earth, in the Gods’ place of sacrifice. For Makha thee; for Makha’s head thee!
Mantra 6
इन्द्र॒स्यौज॑ स्थ म॒खस्य॑ वो॒ऽद्य शिरो॑ राध्यासं देव॒यज॑ने पृथि॒व्याः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
Ye are Indra’s vigour: this day would I successfully set you as the head of Makha, on the Earth, in the Gods’ place of sacrifice. For Makha thee; for Makha’s head thee! (repeated as prescribed).
Mantra 7
प्रैतु॒ ब्रह्म॑ण॒स्पति॒: प्र दे॒व्ये॒तु सू॒नृता॑ । अच्छा॑ वी॒रं नर्यं॑ प॒ङ्क्तिरा॑धसं दे॒वा य॒ज्ञं न॑यन्तु नः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
Let Brahmaṇaspati go forth; let divine Sūnṛtā go forth. Unto the hero, the manly one, prospering in the fivefold order—may the Gods lead our sacrifice. For Makha thee; for Makha’s head thee! (thrice).
Mantra 8
म॒खस्य॒ शिरो॑ऽसि । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खस्य॒ शिरो॑ऽसि । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खस्य॒ शिरो॑ऽसि । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे
Thou art Makha’s head. For Makha thee; for Makha’s head thee. (Repeated according to the several settings.)
Mantra 9
अश्व॑स्य त्वा॒ वृष्ण॑ः श॒क्ना धू॑पयामि देव॒यज॑ने पृथि॒व्याः । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे ।
Thee, belonging to the stallion-horse, with effective power do I incense on the gods’ sacrificial ground of Earth. For Makha (the Sacrifice) thee; of Makha thee; for the head thee.
Mantra 10
ऋ॒जवे॑ त्वा सा॒धवे॑ त्वा सुक्षि॒त्यै त्वा॑ । म॒खाय॑ त्वा म॒खस्य॑ त्वा शी॒र्ष्णे ।
For straightness thee; for well-being thee; for good settlement thee. For Makha thee; of Makha thee; for the head thee.
Mantra 11
य॒माय॑ त्वा म॒खाय॑ त्वा॒ सूर्य॑स्य त्वा॒ तप॑से । दे॒वस्त्वा॑ सवि॒ता मध्वा॑नक्तु पृथि॒व्याः स॒ᳪस्पृश॑स्पाहि । अ॒र्चिर॑सि शो॒चिर॑सि॒ तपो॑ऽसि
For Yama thee; for Makha thee; for Sūrya thee, for heat. May the god Savitar anoint thee with sweetness; protect thou the contact with Earth. Thou art flame; thou art splendour; thou art ardour.
Mantra 12
अना॑धृष्टा पु॒रस्ता॑द॒ग्नेराधि॑पत्य॒ आयु॑र्मे दाः पु॒त्रव॑ती दक्षिण॒त इन्द्र॒स्याधि॑पत्ये प्र॒जां मे॑ दाः । सु॒षदा॑ प॒श्चाद्दे॒वस्य॑ सवि॒तुराधि॑पत्ये॒ चक्षु॑र्मे दा आस्रु॑तिरुत्तर॒तो धा॒तुराधि॑पत्ये रा॒यस्पोषं॑ मे दाः । विधृ॑तिरु॒परि॑ष्टा॒द्बृह॒स्पते॒राधि॑पत्ये॒ ओजो॑ मे दा विश्वा॑भ्यो मा ना॒ष्ट्राभ्य॑स्पाहि मनो॒रश्वा॑सि
Unassailed in front, under Agni’s lordship, grant me life. Fruitful on the south, under Indra’s lordship, grant me offspring. Well-seated behind, under the god Savitar’s lordship, grant me sight. Unfailing on the north, under Dhātṛ’s lordship, grant me wealth with increase. Upholding above, under Bṛhaspati’s lordship, grant me vigour. From all misfortunes protect me: thou art Manu’s horse.
Mantra 13
स्वाहा॑ म॒रुद्भि॒ः परि॑ श्रीयस्व दि॒वः स॒ᳪस्पृश॑स्पाहि । मधु॒ मधु॒ मधु॑
Svāhā! With the Maruts encompass thyself with splendour; protect the contact with heaven. Sweetness, sweetness, sweetness.
Mantra 14
गर्भो॑ दे॒वानां॑ पि॒ता म॑ती॒नां पति॑ः प्र॒जाना॑म् । सं दे॒वो दे॒वेन॑ सवि॒त्रा ग॑त॒ सᳪसूर्ये॑ण रोचते
The Germ, the Father of the Gods, the Lord of holy thoughts, the Master of creatures,—the God, in concord with the God Savitṛ, hath gone; in concord with the Sun he shineth forth.
Mantra 15
सम॒ग्निर॒ग्निना॑ गत॒ सं दैवे॑न सवि॒त्रा सᳪ सूर्ये॑णारोचिष्ट । स्वाहा॒ सम॒ग्निस्तप॑सा गत॒ सं दैव्ये॑न सवि॒त्रा सᳪसूर्ये॑णारूरुचत
Agni, in concord with Agni, hath gone; in concord with the Divine, with Savitṛ, in concord with the Sun thou hast shone forth. Svāhā! Agni, by ardour, hath gone; in concord with the Divine, with Savitṛ, in concord with the Sun he hath shone with exceeding brightness.
Mantra 16
ध॒र्ता दि॒वो वि भा॑ति॒ तप॑सस्पृथि॒व्यां ध॒र्ता दे॒वो दे॒वाना॒मम॑र्त्यस्तपो॒जाः । वाच॑म॒स्मे नि य॑च्छ देवा॒युव॑म्
The Upholder of heaven shineth forth; by ardour, on the earth, the Upholder,—the God of gods, immortal, born of heat. Set speech firm within us, O God, and vital life.
Mantra 17
अप॑श्यं गो॒पामनि॑पद्यमान॒मा च॒ परा॑ च प॒थिभि॒श्चर॑न्तम् । स स॒ध्रीची॒ः स विषू॑ची॒र्वसा॑न॒ आ व॑रीवर्त्ति॒ भुव॑नेष्व॒न्तः
I beheld the Herdsman, never stumbling, moving to and fro along his paths. He, wearing paths that meet and paths that part, within the worlds doth ever turn and move about.
Mantra 18
विश्वा॑सां भुवां पते॒ विश्व॑स्य मनसस्पते॒ विश्व॑स्य वचसस्पते॒ सर्व॑स्य वचसस्पते । दे॒व॒श्रुत्त्वं दे॑व घर्म दे॒वो दे॒वान् पा॒ह्यत्र॒ प्रावी॒रनु॑ वां दे॒ववी॑तये । मधु॒ माध्वी॑भ्यां॒ मधु॒ माधू॑चीभ्याम्
Lord of all worlds, Lord of the mind of all, Lord of the speech of all, Lord of every speech,—be thou god-heard, O God, O Gharma! As a God, protect the Gods here: thou hast protected, following you twain, for the Gods’ enjoyment. Sweet with the honeyed (draughts), sweet with the sweet-flowing (essences).
Mantra 19
हृ॒दे त्वा॒ मन॑से त्वा दि॒वे त्वा॒ सूर्या॑य त्वा । ऊ॒र्ध्वो अ॑ध्व॒रं दि॒वि दे॒वेषु॑ धेहि
Unto the heart thee, unto the mind thee, unto heaven thee, unto the Sun thee. Set thou the sacrifice upright; in heaven, among the gods, establish it.
Mantra 20
पि॒ता नो॑ऽसि पि॒ता नो॑ बोधि॒ नम॑स्ते अतु॒ मा मा॑ हिᳪसीः । त्वष्टृ॑मन्तस्त्वा सपेम पु॒त्रान्प॒शून्मयि॑ धेहि प्र॒जाम॒स्मासु॑ धे॒ह्यरि॑ष्टा॒ऽहᳪ स॒ह प॑त्या भूयासम्
Thou art our Father; as our Father take heed of us. Homage to thee: do thou not harm me. Endowed with Tvaṣṭṛ, may we win thee by service: place sons and cattle in me; place offspring among us. Unharmed may I be, together with my husband, may I abide.
Mantra 21
अह॑: के॒तुना॑ जुषताᳪ सु॒ज्योति॒र्ज्योति॑षा॒ स्वाहा॑ । रात्रि॑: के॒तुना॑ जुषताᳪ सु॒ज्योति॒र्ज्योति॑षा॒ स्वाहा॑
May Day, with its token, accept the oblation—good light with light—Svāhā! May Night, with its token, accept the oblation—good light with light—Svāhā!
It ritualizes the sacrifice as a living person (Makha/Yajña) and installs a stable “head” as the rite’s embodied center, so the Śrāddha-linked offering proceeds with firm foundation, vigour, and right order.
Through a comprehensive all-directions formula that stations the sacrificer and rite securely in every quarter and above, plus sealing invocations (e.g., Maruts) and witness-orientation toward Sūrya and heaven.
They integrate the rite with the full cycle of time, asking each (Day and Night) to accept the offering by its own ketu (mark), thereby harmonizing memorial intent with cosmic rhythm and continuity.
