Pavamāna Soma’s pressing, filtration, and swift purifying flow, paired with Indra’s guidance and protection for the rite
Soma Pavamāna
Bright forward-driving and cleansing—moving from vigorous flow imagery to confident petition and protection
Rṣi not provided in the input; identification requires concordance with the underlying Ṛgvedic source for these mantras and the śākhā’s anukramaṇī tradition.
Pavamāna-stotra usage: aligned with Soma’s pressing/filtration imagery and the offering’s purification before presentation
Mantra 1
इन्द्र क्रतुं न आ भर पिता पुत्रेभ्यो यथा शिक्षा णो अस्मिन्पुरुहूत यामनि जीव ज्योतिरशीमहि
Indra, bring to us (right) purpose and power, as a father (brings good) to his sons; instruct us, much-invoked, in this rite, that we may obtain living light.
Mantra 2
मा नो अज्ञाता वृजना दुराध्यो3 माशिवासो ऽव क्रमुः त्वया वयं प्रवतः शश्वतीरपो ऽति शूर तरामसि
Let not unknown and hard-to-vanquish bands assail us; let not inauspicious evils tread us down: with thee, O hero, may we pass beyond the descents, may we cross over the perennial waters.
It joins two concerns of the Soma rite: Soma must be pressed and purified (through strainers and waters), and Indra must grant kratu—right resolve and skill—so the sacrifice succeeds and obstacles are overcome.
Soma is the offering that becomes potent through purification; Indra is asked to empower the performers, teach correct performance, and protect the sacrificer from hostile or inauspicious forces during the rite.
It points to a blessing of sustained vitality and auspicious illumination—often understood as longevity, clear well-being, and the successful fruition of the sacrifice under Indra’s guidance.
