
Sukta 8.93
Sūrya (with strong Indraic epithets in the praise)
This hymn is a dawnward invocation where Sūrya is hailed as the rising, victorious power who “carries beyond,” while the praise simultaneously adopts strong Indraic language of conquest, protection, and boon-giving. It asks for awakening, strength, and prosperity—especially the overcoming of obstacles (Vṛtra-like restraints), abundant vitality, and winning power (vāja) for the worshippers.
Mantra 1
उद्घेदभि श्रुतामघं वृषभं नर्यापसम् । अस्तारमेषि सूर्य ॥
Rise up, O Sun, towards the famed-bounteous Bull, the doer of manly works; you go to the one who makes a crossing—toward the overcomer who carries beyond.
Mantra 2
नव यो नवतिं पुरो बिभेद बाह्वोजसा । अहिं च वृत्रहावधीत् ॥
He who shattered the ninety-and-nine strongholds by the arm’s force, and who as Vṛtra-slayer struck down the Serpent—may that conquering power be active for us within.
Mantra 3
स न इन्द्रः शिवः सखाश्वावद्गोमद्यवमत् । उरुधारेव दोहते ॥
May that Indra be for us a gracious friend—abounding in the powers of movement (horses), rich in rays of light (cows), rich in the sustenance of growth (grain); like a wide-streaming cow he yields the milk of plenitude.
Mantra 4
यदद्य कच्च वृत्रहन्नुदगा अभि सूर्य । सर्वं तदिन्द्र ते वशे ॥
Whatever today, O Vṛtra-slayer, you have raised up toward the Sun— all that, O Indra, stands within your mastery: the movement of our energies toward the light is your act and your governance.
Mantra 5
यद्वा प्रवृद्ध सत्पते न मरा इति मन्यसे । उतो तत्सत्यमित्तव ॥
And if, O ever-increasing lord of the true, you think, ‘I shall not perish’— indeed that is your truth: your being stands in an imperishable reality and does not fall away.
Mantra 6
ये सोमासः परावति ये अर्वावति सुन्विरे । सर्वाँस्ताँ इन्द्र गच्छसि ॥
The Soma-pourings—those from afar and those from near—whoever press them out: to all of them, O Indra, you come. Your force answers every sincere call of aspiration.
Mantra 7
तमिन्द्रं वाजयामसि महे वृत्राय हन्तवे । स वृषा वृषभो भुवत् ॥
That Indra we strengthen with the plenitudes of force, for the great slaying of Vṛtra. May he become the Bull, the bull-strong— the conquering energy that breaks the inner obstruction.
Mantra 8
इन्द्रः स दामने कृत ओजिष्ठः स मदे हितः । द्युम्नी श्लोकी स सोम्यः ॥
Indra—he is established in the house (the settled field of our being); he is the most puissant, placed in the ecstasy. He is luminous in splendor and in inspired utterance; he is of the Soma-nature, delight-bearing.
Mantra 9
गिरा वज्रो न सम्भृतः सबलो अनपच्युतः । ववक्ष ऋष्वो अस्तृतः ॥
By the Word, like a gathered thunderbolt, strong and unwavering, he has grown vast—lofty, unbroken. The mantric speech builds the indestructible weapon of victory within.
Mantra 10
दुर्गे चिन्नः सुगं कृधि गृणान इन्द्र गिर्वणः । त्वं च मघवन्वशः ॥
Even in the difficult passage, make for us the good path, O Indra, delighting in our hymns. You, O Maghavan, are the masterful guide—bring our nature under the rule of the luminous Will.
Mantra 12
अधा ते अप्रतिष्कुतं देवी शुष्मं सपर्यतः । उभे सुशिप्र रोदसी ॥
Then your irresistible force, O fair-lipped one, the goddess-powers serve and cherish; and both the worlds (heaven and earth) respond to you. Your might is a law the whole being obeys.
Mantra 13
त्वमेतदधारयः कृष्णासु रोहिणीषु च । परुष्णीषु रुशत्पयः ॥
You held this shining milk even among the dark and the reddening powers, and in the rough currents: you preserve the luminous nourishment within mixed conditions of the nature.
Mantra 14
वि यदहेरध त्विषो विश्वे देवासो अक्रमुः । विदन्मृगस्य ताँ अमः ॥
When the serpent’s glare was dispersed, then all the gods strode forth in their powers; finding the tracks of the wild one, they knew them. The light-forces advance once the subconscient coil is broken.
Mantra 15
आदु मे निवरो भुवद्वृत्रहादिष्ट पौंस्यम् । अजातशत्रुरस्तृतः ॥
Then for me there came a turning-back (a restraint that becomes a safeguard): the slayer of the Coverer has ordained the manly power. Unborn-to-enmity, he stands unpierced—unwounded in the battle within.
Mantra 16
श्रुतं वो वृत्रहन्तमं प्र शर्धं चर्षणीनाम् । आ शुषे राधसे महे ॥
We have heard of your most Vṛtra-slaying might, the forward-driving host of the peoples. Come to our ardent call, for the great plenitude of fulfilment.
Mantra 17
अया धिया च गव्यया पुरुणामन्पुरुष्टुत । यत्सोमेसोम आभवः ॥
By this thought, and by the luminous (cow-winning) vision, O thou of many names, much praised—since in each Soma, again and again, thou comest into manifestation.
Mantra 18
बोधिन्मना इदस्तु नो वृत्रहा भूर्यासुतिः । शृणोतु शक्र आशिषम् ॥
May the Vṛtra-slayer be awakened in mind for us—he of abundant pressings. Let the Strong One hear our will of blessing.
Mantra 19
कया त्वं न ऊत्याभि प्र मन्दसे वृषन् । कया स्तोतृभ्य आ भर ॥
By what help wilt thou gladden thyself over us, O Bull of power? By what means wilt thou bring thy increase to the singers?
Mantra 20
कस्य वृषा सुते सचा नियुत्वान्वृषभो रणत् । वृत्रहा सोमपीतये ॥
With whose pressed Soma does the Bull, yoked with his steeds, thunder in companionship—he the Vṛtra-slayer—for the drinking of the Soma?
Mantra 21
अभी षु णस्त्वं रयिं मन्दसानः सहस्रिणम् । प्रयन्ता बोधि दाशुषे ॥
Do thou indeed turn toward us with the rayi, rejoicing, a thousand-fold plenitude. As one who brings forward, be awake to the giver (the one who offers).
Mantra 22
पत्नीवन्तः सुता इम उशन्तो यन्ति वीतये । अपां जग्मिर्निचुम्पुणः ॥
These pressings, attended by their companion powers, eager, go for the enjoyment (of the god). They have gone to the waters—those who sip downwards—seeking the deep current within.
Mantra 23
इष्टा होत्रा असृक्षतेन्द्रं वृधासो अध्वरे । अच्छावभृथमोजसा ॥
The desired invocations have been released; the increasers have sent Indra forth in the sacrifice—toward the cleansing immersion, by force of power.
Mantra 24
इह त्या सधमाद्या हरी हिरण्यकेश्या । वोळ्हामभि प्रयो हितम् ॥
Here—those two comrades of the common delight, the two tawny ones with golden manes—bring them hither toward the placed offering, the prepared nourishment of the journey.
Mantra 25
तुभ्यं सोमाः सुता इमे स्तीर्णं बर्हिर्विभावसो । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्रमा वह ॥
For thee these Soma-pressings have been prepared; the sacred seat is spread out, O radiant One. Bring Indra here to the singers—bring the Power that awakens victorious force within us.
Mantra 26
आ ते दक्षं वि रोचना दधद्रत्ना वि दाशुषे । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्रमर्चत ॥
May the luminous regions set forth thy effective power, placing the treasures wide for the giver. Praise Indra for the singers—the Lord of might who opens the riches of being.
Mantra 27
आ ते दधामीन्द्रियमुक्था विश्वा शतक्रतो । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्र मृळय ॥
I set in thee the indriya—thy lordly might—through all the hymns, O hundred-powered. Be gracious to the singers, Indra; make us grow in safety and strength.
Mantra 28
भद्रम्भद्रं न आ भरेषमूर्जं शतक्रतो । यदिन्द्र मृळयासि नः ॥
Bring to us ever anew the good—the good in its fullness—bring desire-force and sustaining strength, O hundred-powered, if thou art gracious to us, Indra.
Mantra 29
स नो विश्वान्या भर सुवितानि शतक्रतो । यदिन्द्र मृळयासि नः ॥
Bring to us all the fair leadings and right felicities, O hundred-powered, if thou art gracious to us, Indra.
Mantra 30
त्वामिद्वृत्रहन्तम सुतावन्तो हवामहे । यदिन्द्र मृळयासि नः ॥
Thee indeed, most slayer of the Coverer, we who have the pressed Soma call—if thou art gracious to us, Indra.
Mantra 31
उप नो हरिभिः सुतं याहि मदानां पते । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥
Come near to us with thy tawny steeds to the pressed Soma, O lord of the raptures; come near to us with thy tawny steeds to the pressed delight.
Mantra 32
द्विता यो वृत्रहन्तमो विद इन्द्रः शतक्रतुः । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥
He who is twice over the supreme slayer of the Coverer—Indra, the hundred-powered, is known: come near to us with thy tawny steeds to the pressed Soma.
Mantra 33
त्वं हि वृत्रहन्नेषां पाता सोमानामसि । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥
For thou indeed, O slayer of the Coverer, art the drinker of these Soma-energies. Come near to us with thy tawny steeds to the pressed delight.
Mantra 34
इन्द्र इषे ददातु न ऋभुक्षणमृभुं रयिम् । वाजी ददातु वाजिनम् ॥
May Indra give us for our impulsion the Ribhukṣaṇa—Ribhu—richness of plenitude; may the Vājī give the vājin, the force that wins and increases power.
It primarily invokes Sūrya (the rising sun), but it strongly overlaps with Indra’s language and even names Indra (Śakra, Vṛtrahan). The hymn uses both to express one aim: awakening and victory over obstacles.
Awakening (clarity and readiness), protection through the breaking of hindrances, and tangible increase—wealth (rayi) and winning strength/energy (vāja) for successful work.
At dawn or sunrise. The hymn’s imagery and purpose align with the moment the sun rises and the mind and world are being ‘awakened’ for the day.
