Śaraṇāgata-Atithi-Dharma in the Kapota Narrative (कपोत-आख्यानम्—शरणागतधर्मः)

उच्छिन्नकृषिगोरक्षा निवृत्तविपणापणा । निवृत्तयूपसम्भारा विप्रणष्टमहोत्सवा

ucchinna-kṛṣi-gorakṣā nivṛtta-vipaṇāpaṇā | nivṛtta-yūpa-sambhārā vipraṇaṣṭa-mahotsavā ||

ភីෂ្មៈបានមានព្រះវាចា៖ «នៅសម័យអវសាននោះ កសិកម្ម និងការពារគោក្របីត្រូវបានបំផ្លាញ; ទីផ្សារ និងពាណិជ្ជកម្មឈប់ដំណើរការ។ ការរៀបចំពិធីយជ្ញ—ដែលមានសសរយជ្ញ (យូប) ជាសញ្ញា—បានផ្អាក ហើយពិធីមង្គល និងមហោស្រពធំៗក៏រលាយបាត់។ នេះជារូបភាពនៃសង្គមដែលសសរស្តម្ភសាធារណៈនៃធម្មៈ—ជីវភាព ការផ្លាស់ប្តូរ ពិធីបូជា និងការប្រារព្ធរួម—បានរលំ បង្ហាញពីការបែកបាក់នៃសីលធម៌ និងពិធីការ»។

Dharma is sustained not only by private virtue but also by public institutions—productive livelihood (kṛṣi), protection of cattle (gorakṣā), fair exchange (markets), and Vedic-sacrificial culture (yūpa/yajña). When these supports collapse, society’s moral and spiritual order visibly deteriorates.

Bhishma is describing a period of widespread degeneration: farming and cattle-care fail, commerce stops, sacrificial arrangements are abandoned, and major festivals vanish—portraying the outward signs of a deeper breakdown of dharma in the realm.
