उपवासविधि-प्रश्नः

Inquiry into the Discipline of Fasting

धर्म हि श्रेय इत्याहुरिति धर्मविदो जना: । बड़ा भाई अच्छा काम करनेवाला हो या बुरा

dharma hi śreya ity āhur iti dharmavido janāḥ |

ភីෂ្មៈបានមានព្រះវាចា៖ «អ្នកដឹងធម៌ទាំងឡាយនិយាយថា ‘ធម៌ឯងជាកុសលដ៏ខ្ពង់ខ្ពស់បំផុត’។ ដូច្នេះ ទោះបងប្រុសច្បងធ្វើល្អឬអាក្រក់ កូនប្អូនមិនគួរប្រមាថគាត់ឡើយ។ ហើយបើភរិយា ឬប្អូនប្រុសតូច ធ្លាក់ចូលផ្លូវខុស បុរសអ្នកលើសគេគួររកវិធីណាដែលនាំទៅសុខុមាលភាព និងការកែប្រែពិតប្រាកដ—ព្រោះធម៌ត្រូវបានបង្រៀនថាជាមធ្យោបាយដ៏ប្រសើរបំផុតនៃសេចក្តីក្សេមក្សាន្ត»។

Dharma is presented as the supreme means to welfare (śreyas). From this follows an ethic of restraint and responsibility within the family: do not dishonor elders, and when dependents or juniors go astray, guide them by whatever effective, welfare-producing means aligns with dharma.

In the Anushasana Parva’s instruction section, Bhishma continues advising on righteous conduct. Here he summarizes the authority of dharma-teachers—“dharma is the highest good”—and applies it to household relationships, emphasizing respect and corrective guidance rather than contempt.
