पापभेदवर्णनम्
Classification of Sins / Taxonomy of Pāpa
द्विजदुःखकरा ये च प्रहारं चोद्धरंति ये । सेवन्ते तु द्विजाश्शूद्रां सुरां बध्नंति कामतः
dvijaduḥkhakarā ye ca prahāraṃ coddharaṃti ye | sevante tu dvijāśśūdrāṃ surāṃ badhnaṃti kāmataḥ
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: The verse frames social/ritual transgressions as pāśa-tightening; pilgrimage without dharmic conduct is implicitly rendered spiritually unproductive.
It frames certain harmful, desire-driven actions as creators of pāśa (bondage), reinforcing the Shaiva Siddhānta view that karma and impurity (mala) thicken when one injures others and lives by uncontrolled kāma, delaying the soul’s turning toward Pati (Śiva).
Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is not merely ritual; it is purification of conduct and intention. This verse implies that devotion to Saguna Śiva bears fruit when paired with restraint and non-injury, otherwise the devotee remains bound by pāśa despite outward practice.
Adopt purification alongside worship: japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), wearing Rudrākṣa and applying Tripuṇḍra with a vow of ahiṃsā and sobriety, so the mind becomes fit for Śiva-bhakti and inner yoga.
