The Determination of Śiva as the Meaning of Praṇava
उदग्गृहीत्वा स्वाहेति देवार्थेऽन्नं यजेत्पुनः । न ममेति वदेदन्ते सर्वत्रायं विधिक्रमः
udaggṛhītvā svāheti devārthe'nnaṃ yajetpunaḥ | na mameti vadedante sarvatrāyaṃ vidhikramaḥ
供物を恭しく持ち上げて「スヴァーハー」と唱え、諸天のために再び食の供養をなすべし。終わりには「我がものにあらず」と言う。これが遍く定められた作法の次第である。
Suta Goswami (narrating the prescribed Shaiva ritual procedure to the sages, as typical in Purana discourse)
Tattva Level: pashu
Mantra: svāhā; na mama
Offering: naivedya
It teaches that offerings become spiritually pure when the doer relinquishes possessiveness—ending with “na mama” dissolves egoistic ownership, aligning action with devotion and liberation (moksha) in a Shaiva frame.
Even when worship is performed through Saguna forms and ritual acts, the inner completion is surrender: the offering is made as divine service, and “na mama” ensures the act is dedicated to Shiva’s order rather than personal gain.
Perform the offering while uttering “svāhā,” and conclude with the contemplation “na mama” (“not mine”), training the mind in surrender and non-attachment alongside external worship.
