Ravana Deploys Five Generals; Hanuman Destroys the Commanders and the Remaining Host
mahāmatiṃ mahāvegaṃ mahākāyaṃ mahābalam | taṃ samīkṣyaiva te sarve dikṣu sarvāsv avasthitāḥ || tais taiḥ praharaṇair bhīmair abhipetus tatas tataḥ ||
Having observed the tremendous strength, intelligence and swiftness in action of Hanuman, the generals of the army positioned at all directions and assailed him with dreadful weapons.
Dharma is tested in adversity: righteousness often faces coordinated opposition, and the verse frames the moral battlefield where steadfast duty must endure pressure from all sides.
Rākṣasa fighters, recognizing Hanumān’s formidable qualities, surround and attack him from multiple directions with varied weapons.
Hanumān’s dhairya and vīrya (steadfast courage and valor) are implied by the need for many attackers and many weapons to confront him.
