The Ogresses’ Threats to Sita and Her Vow of Fidelity
anyā tu vikaṭā nāma lambamāna-payodharā || 5.24.28 ||
abravīt kupitā sītāṃ muṣṭim udyamya garjatī |
Now Vikata another ogress with hanging breasts raised her fist up in anger and roared at Sita.
The verse sets up the ethical contrast: intimidation and cruelty are portrayed as the rākṣasīs’ mode, against which Sītā’s dharmic restraint and truthfulness stand out.
A new rākṣasī, Vikaṭā, steps forward physically threatening Sītā, signaling escalation in the harassment.
Sītā’s patience (kṣamā) is implicitly emphasized by the depiction of surrounding aggression.
