Rama’s Grief Restrained—Sugriva’s Consolation
hitaṃ vayasyabhāvena brūmi nopadiśāmi te | vayasyatāṃ pūjayan me na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi || 4.7.14 ||
'Out of friendly concern I offer my opinion in your interest. I am not competent to advise you. Respecting my friendship, you should never yield to grief.'
Sakhya-dharma: true friendship offers honest, beneficial counsel with humility, aiming to restore the other’s strength for righteous action.
Sugrīva frames his advice as friendly concern rather than authority, reinforcing the alliance and urging Rāma beyond grief.
Vinaya (modesty) coupled with satya-hita-vacana (truthful speech aimed at welfare).
