दूत्यम् / Hanuman’s Mediation and Lakshmana’s Appeal to Sugriva
ईदृशा बुद्धिसम्पन्ना जितक्रोधा जितेन्द्रियाः।द्रष्टव्या वानरेन्द्रेण दिष्ट्या दर्शनमागताः।।
īdṛśā buddhisampannā jitakrodhā jitendriyāḥ | draṣṭavyā vānarendreṇa diṣṭyā darśanam āgatāḥ ||
まことに幸いなるかな。このような人々—智慧に満ち、怒りを克服し、諸感覚を制した方々—が来てくださったのだ。会見を求めて猿王のほうから、あなたがたのもとへ参るべきである。
'It is a matter of great fortune that you who have intelligence, control over your senses and conquered anger have come to see the lord of monkeys who needs instead, to approach you.
Dharma is self-governance: mastery over anger and senses qualifies one for righteous action and worthy association; it also implies proper protocol (maryādā) in approaching the virtuous.
Hanumān assesses Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa’s qualities and argues that Sugrīva should respectfully approach them.
Rāma–Lakṣmaṇa’s restraint (jitakrodha, jitendriya) and Hanumān’s discernment in recognizing virtue.
