Tārā’s Lament over Vāli
idaṃ tac chūra-śayanaṃ yatra śeṣe hato yudhi | śāyitā nihatā yatra tvayaiva ripavaḥ purā ||
'Earlier you have killed enemies in combats and made them lie down where now you lie.
It teaches the impermanence of power: even the mighty fall, urging restraint, humility, and adherence to dharma rather than reliance on sheer strength.
Tārā contrasts Vāli’s former victories with his present defeat, deepening the tragedy of the scene.
Vāli’s martial prowess is acknowledged, while the verse simultaneously stresses the fragility of worldly glory.
