Rama’s Lament at Pampa and the Approach to Rishyamuka
smitahāsyāntarayutaṃ guṇavan madhuraṃ hitam | vaidehyā vākyam atulaṃ kadā śroṣyāmi lakṣmaṇa ||
'When can I listen to Sita's sweet, wholesome and virtuous, incomparable words interlaced with her gentle smile, O Lakshmana?
Dharma values speech that is both sweet and beneficial (madhura + hita); Rama remembers Sita’s virtuous communication as an ethical ideal, not mere charm.
Rama longs to hear Sita again, recalling her manner of speaking as a source of moral and emotional strength.
Sita’s guṇa in speech—kindness, propriety, and truth-aligned counsel expressed gently.
