Ayomukhi Encounter and the ظهور of Kabandha
अथ तौ समभिक्रम्य क्रोशमात्रे ददर्शतुः।।।।महान्तं दारुणं भीमं कबन्धं भुजसंवृम्।कबन्धमिव संस्थानादतिघोरप्रदर्शनम्।।।।
atha tau samabhikramya krośa-mātre dadarśatuḥ |
mahāntaṁ dāruṇaṁ bhīmaṁ kabandhaṁ bhuja-saṁvṛtam |
kabandham iva saṁsthānād ati-ghora-pradarśanam ||3.69.33||
やがて二人が一クロ―シャほど進むと、カバンダが見えた。巨大で残忍、恐るべき者で、胴のような姿をなし、その両腕で周囲の空間を取り巻き、きわめて凄惨な相を現していた。
Then the brothers after covering one krosa (2 miles) saw a cruel, fierce, mighty monster named Kabandha looking like a trunk. He had a dreadful appearance and his arms encircled the area.
The verse underscores vigilance and discernment: Dharma requires recognizing threats clearly, not denying them, so that righteous action can be taken.
Rama and Lakshmana draw near and finally see Kabandha’s monstrous form at close range.
Prudent awareness (jāgratā) paired with courage—seeing danger as it is, without panic.
