Ātmā (the Self) [as indicated by 'ātmovāca']

Concept: The Self invites the five to declare their own guṇa and prabhāva—true friendship with the Self requires self-knowledge: naming one’s tendencies and capacities honestly.

Application: Perform a daily ‘inner council’: identify your five dominant forces (senses/mind/traits), state their strengths and risks, and consciously align them to a devotional intention (e.g., ‘let speech become kīrtana’).

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Ātmā appears as a serene, luminous presence seated on a white lotus within a vast inner sky, neither male nor female, radiating quiet authority. Before this presence stand five personified powers, each holding an emblem of their function, ready to declare their virtues and distinctive strengths as if in a sacred trial of self-understanding.","primary_figures":["Ātmā (the Self, luminous presence)","Five allegorical figures (pañca) representing inner powers/faculties"],"setting":"An inner cosmos: a heart-lotus floating in a starless, pearl-like expanse, with subtle mandala geometry and faint conch-lotus motifs indicating Vaiṣṇava orientation.","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["pearl white","pale gold","celestial blue","lavender mist","lotus pink"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Ātmā as a radiant, serene figure seated on a white lotus-throne with an expansive gold leaf aura; five attendant allegorical figures in front, each with symbolic emblems (scripture, rosary, mirror, lamp, conch) representing their prabhāva; ornate arch with gold leaf, rich maroon and emerald textiles, gem-studded ornaments, symmetrical sacred composition emphasizing inner sovereignty.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: a luminous lotus floating in a soft, misty inner sky; Ātmā calm and centered, five figures arranged in a gentle semicircle; delicate brushwork, cool blues and lilacs, refined faces, lyrical minimalism, subtle mandala lines like faint clouds.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: Ātmā enthroned on lotus with bold outlines and stylized eyes, surrounded by a circular mandala; five figures in rhythmic arrangement; natural pigments (red/yellow/green) with black contouring, temple-wall aesthetic, floral borders suggesting inner sanctum.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central white lotus with radiant aura; five figures as attendants; intricate lotus-vine borders, subtle śaṅkha-cakra motifs to hint Paramātma orientation; deep indigo background with gold and white detailing, dense floral ornamentation, devotional stillness."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"serene","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","single bell at verse start","deep silence","soft conch resonance (very faint)"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: आत्मोवाच = आत्मा + उवाच (आ + उ → ओ); पंचैव = पंच + एव; ममाग्रतः = मम + अग्रतः (अ + अ → आ).

FAQs

The speaker is Ātmā (“the Self”), explicitly marked by the narration tag “ātmovāca” (“the Self said”).

They are asked to declare, in the speaker’s presence, their own guṇa (virtues/qualities) and prabhāva (distinctive power or efficacy).

The verse highlights discernment in relationships: friendship should be grounded in clearly understood character (guṇa) and proven capability or influence (prabhāva), aligning companionship with dharmic and purposeful qualities.
