Mohinī-prashna
The Question about Mohinī
पुराणैः स्मृतिभिश्चैव वेद एव निगद्यते । रटंतीह पुराणानि भूयो भूयो वरानने ॥ २३ ॥
purāṇaiḥ smṛtibhiścaiva veda eva nigadyate | raṭaṃtīha purāṇāni bhūyo bhūyo varānane || 23 ||
プラーナとスムリティによって、まさにヴェーダそのものが宣示される。美しき顔の者よ、ここでプラーナはこの真理を、幾度も幾度も響かせる。
Narada (teaching to a female interlocutor addressed as varānane)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It establishes that Purāṇas and Smṛtis are meant to restate and make accessible the Veda’s intent—so dharma and spiritual practice can be understood and lived in the world.
By affirming Purāṇas as Veda-expositors, it legitimizes Purāṇic bhakti teachings (such as devotion to Viṣṇu) as grounded in Vedic purpose, repeatedly emphasized for practitioners.
It highlights the interpretive function of tradition—Smṛti and Purāṇa act as applied guidance for Vedic dharma (rules, rites, and conduct), even when technical Vedāṅga detail is not explicitly listed in this verse.
