Ethical action includes safeguarding another’s honor: by making her choice openly in the presence of the gods, the speaker ensures that Nala cannot be accused of deceit or impropriety, aligning personal desire with dharma and social accountability.
In the context of the svayaṃvara episode, Nala addresses the king of Niṣadha (himself as addressed in the scene) and states that the choice will be made before the assembled gods, so that no fault or blame will fall upon him.
