स काम इति मे बुद्धि: कर्मणां फलमुत्तमम् | 'पाँचों ज्ञानेन्द्रियों, मन और बुद्धिकी अपने विषयोंमें प्रवृत्त होनेके समय जो प्रीति होती है, वही मेरी समझमें काम है। वह कर्मोका उत्तम फल है
sa kāma iti me buddhiḥ karmaṇāṃ phalam uttamam |
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは言った。「我が理解によれば、知の五根が心と知性とともにそれぞれの対象へ向かうときに生ずる歓喜—それをカーマ(欲)と呼ぶ。人はそれを、行為が結ぶ最上の『果』とみなす。」
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse defines kāma as the felt pleasure or attraction that arises when the senses, mind, and intellect engage their objects, and frames it as a highly valued outcome people seek through action—highlighting how desire is rooted in sensory-mental engagement and motivates karma.
Vaiśampāyana is explaining a conceptual point within the Vana Parva discourse: he offers a definition of kāma and links it to karma-phala (the results of actions), clarifying the psychological basis of desire in terms of the senses, mind, and intellect.
